Anax Power & ATCO to Install 1MW Anax Turboexpander (ATE) to Generate Clean Power in Calgary, AB

Wharton, NJ – Anax Power (, whose proprietary technology generates clean power from natural gas, without combustion, has signed a letter of intent with ATCO Gas (ATCO), an Alberta-based natural gas distributor, to install the Anax Turboexpander (ATE) at the South Glenmore Park Gate Station outside Calgary as part of a one-year pilot study for ATCO. The system will add 1MW clean energy capacity and is expected to be operational by the Summer of 2023.

This project will be the first commercial installation of the ATE in Canada, and it represents one of the only natural gas turboexpander projects on North American pipelines in the past decade.

The ATE uses the pressure and flow of natural gas moving through pipelines to spin a turbine and generate clean power. Furthermore, the system uses waste heat in the pressure letdown process, which may allow the ATE to offset existing scope 1 emissions on site.

Expanding the ATE system to other ATCO sites throughout the province has the potential to reduce emissions from the natural gas industry.

The project is being funded in part by the Government of Alberta through Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) as a part of their 2020 Natural Gas Challenge.
