In order to install a single 500kW ATE, Anax evaluates sites with the following gas conditions:

  • Inlet Pressure > 400 psi (2,757 kPa)
  • Pressure Ratio (inlet pressure/outlet pressure) > 1.3
  • Flow > 15,000 scfm (21.6 MMSCFD)

Higher, more consistent flow rates increase the system’s potential power output. At higher flow rates, Anax installs multiple ATEs operating as a single system to increase capacity.

The 500kW ATE contains an on-skid interstage heat exchanger that controls the gas temperature and ensures the outlet gas meets downstream customer requirements. Anax has a variety of heat sources that integrate with its system, including:

  • Waste heat from industrial processes
  • Heat pumps
  • Waste heat from distributed data centers
  • Waste heat from hydrogen electrolyzers

There are many ways to use the power from the 500kW ATE, and Anax decides the best use based on what makes the most sense for the customer. Options include, but are not limited to:

  • Use power behind the meter to reduce site power costs
  • Sell power to the electricity grid
  • Use power to cryptocurrency or run distributed data centers
  • Pair with a hydrogen electrolyzer to make hydrogen for downstream blending
  • Pair with a battery or other storage solution

While the ATE is installed on natural gas pipelines, it does not combust or otherwise consume natural gas. Instead of using the energy content of the gas, the ATE uses the pressure and flow of the gas moving through pipelines to spin a turbine and generate clean power. Currently, energy stored in the pipeline is wasted in the form of heat in the pressure-letdown process. The ATE harnesses is waste heat to generate carbon-free power.

The 500kW ATE qualifies for several clean-energy incentives at the local, state, and federal level. In many states, as well as several Canadian provinces, the ATE’s power qualifies for renewable energy credits (RECs) or similar carbon offsets. These jurisdictions also provide grants that incentivize the development of clean energy projects in the area.

At the federal level, the ATE qualifies for the same 30% Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) as wind and solar. The ATE qualifies as a ‘waste-to-power’ system and is an important tool in achieving global climate targets.
